Toward Cooperative Underwater Robots for Ecological Surveillance of Marine and Underwater Environments

The objective of this paper is to present a downsized prototype of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) designed with the idea of dealing with cooperative tasks involving multiple agents. The entire system has been designed for marine and underwater environmental surveillance and protection. The agents provide an interesting point in the surveillance of shallow coastal waters and shallow waters up to 100m in depth, where the pollution effect is most important. In addition, the vehicles are useful in a similar way in fresh-water environments such as lakes and reservoirs. The main topics involved are underwater communications, underwater imaging, agents and cooperative agents.
